I knew this once upon a time.   I remember learning somewhere that God would not give me anything new until I let go of the things I am already holding.   The reason for this would be pretty simple.  Your hands can only hold so much.  At some point, if you want to take more, you have to let go of something.

Well that makes sense.

From a pastor’s point of view, there are issues with this when we ask someone to let go of a ministry.  For whatever reason, it’s difficult to let go.  It might have something to do with fear.  Fear of leaving what we know for something we don’t know.  Fear of not being “important” any more.

Here’s a little secret… God promotes people.    He picks you up in the place you are and moves you on to something new.  Something with more responsibility.  More work… possibly.   More authority.    God honors those who use what they have for His glory.  He moves them on to something bigger.  Those who use their talents for His purposes usually get promoted to something bigger and better.  (Matthew 25:14-30)

But… unless we’re willing to cooperate with His leading, we might just stagnate right where we stand.  He may lead us to go to the next thing, but if we don’t let go of what we already are doing…. It’s too much to take on more.

In addition, (oh yes, there’s more) we’re keeping someone else from stepping into their ministry.  If you’re doing an entry-level ministry and refuse to move on, well, let’s face it, you’re keeping someone else from stepping up and beginning a ministry.   It’s a kind of domino effect .  All of the dominoes have to cooperate.

So, my little domino… what is it God is calling you to today?  Is it something more than you are doing now?  Is God calling you to something bigger and better?   He could be.  And so you need to go to whatever that might be.

Make sure you leave what you’re doing now right here.  Someone else will be here shortly to pick it up.
